NIGHTVISION SERIES
HOGI TSAI: COMPOSITION
Gallery 4A front window
Tuesday 28 July - Friday 14 August
6PM - 12AM
Gallery 4A showcases the work of emerging Taiwanese artist, Hogi Tsai, as part of its ongoing Nightvision series.
For the first time, Nightvision will display a playful and interactive new media artwork where audience involvement forms a central part of the piece.
Each night from 6PM the shop front window of Gallery 4A will come alive with pixelated blocks of colour, activated by the movement of passers-by. A melody of sound chimes as the rainbow-coloured blocks light up – animated by the audience’s shadows and movement.
The audience can control what takes shape on the big screen and become part of the art making process. By walking past the screen the spectator animates their own shadows and movement in order to create their own visual and musical composition.
Curator Zhang Yanping says: “an exhibition of this nature is a great way to bring art out of the gallery space, after hours connecting the spectator with the art in an offbeat and random way”.
Examining the role of art and the spectator in contemporary digital society, this exhibition presents a unique social space for musical experimentation and shape shifting entertainment.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Hogi Tsai is an emerging media artist, musician and computer programmer interested in the interplay between video, multimedia and interactive installation art. Originally from Taiwan, he is currently based in Sydney and is a doctorate candidate in Media Art, Faculty of Society Science at the University of Technology. Tsai’s research focuses on game aesthetics, philosophy and contemporary art in Taiwan. Recent work has investigated the relationships between video games and art and exploring authorship and viewer behaviour in a digital society.
